Protein is required in the diet as it contributes to the growth and repair of tissue, but when eating sources including meat, fish and nuts, a high protein diet can be both costly and inconvenient for the busy individual. Protein is one of the three main macronutrients, the others being carbohydrates and fats, and is made up of amino acids: the building blocks of muscle tissue.
When you train, the increased physical demand placed on your muscles causes small tears in the muscle fibres, known as micro tears. To reduce the risk of these tears forming again, the body repairs them while adding extra tissue in an attempt to prevent it happening again, which is why the size of the muscle increases and future growth gets more and more difficult. This repair cannot happen without protein, and the more you train, the more micro tears you cause, meaning more protein is needed to repair and grow.
