kk - I've never been a lover of soya for various reasons but as I have got access to the worlds best protein expert, Phil Connolly, I asked him for a reply here it is:-

Ok guys this is going to be as short as possible but the references take some room:-

Soy protein that is not alcohol washed (and 99% isn’t) contains significant amounts of phytosterols. They have considerable affinity for alpha and beta receptors. This can cause numerous problems – nervous system, immune system, and lipolysis.>>

Soy protein also contains considerable amounts of Lunasin, which survives the digestive system and is taken up intact into the human lymphatic system. Only several hours after consuming Lunasin, it is found in the nuclear region of somatic cells. At this point, Lunasin can then inhibit cell proliferation and differentiation (no growth or tissue repair). Lunasin is believed to be a plant defense mechanism – sort of a dare to any grazing herbivores – Go ahead, eat me. You won’t grow any from eating me, so don’t bother.>>

If you are going to formulate for growth subsequent to exercise, using milk is advantageous since the digestion of milk protein and its amino acid profile facilitate muscle growth. Milk protein seems to have an “on” switch inherent in its structure. Grain proteins seem to have an “off” switch. Soy protein delivers several growth “off” switches.>>

Another study – by Tamopolski (I think) – showed that soy protein post exercise blunts or outright inhibits exercise induced muscle recovery and growth compared to casein and/or whey protein. The theory is that it is a combination of the isoflavone/Lunasin content and the fast digesting of soy protein that causes this effect.>>

From a purely biological point-of-view, soy protein was never intended to be a growth food source for animals. It is considered to be a stasis food source. Soybeans are really much like alfalfa from that standpoint – they are intended to conserve top soil – they re-establish nitrogen levels in soil in conjunction with field grasses so that other, more animal nutritious foods can grow on the plains.>>
