hi kerry,
i was reading flex and a certain company boasts of the best protein in the world.[i assure you]
another uk company claims to use undenatured protein.[also they offer you to test the protein in a lab] r-f--x
how can companies be allowed to make these claims?
i tell my customers peptide and mr is the best and only denatured protein, then you read all the other companies confusing the issue.
is this allowed

kk - There are some companies in the USA making the same claim. A raw material company started the craze, they make a Whey Protein Isolate from CHEESE WHEY, they do all the heat pasteurisation steps etc. and denature the whey protein extensively. Then, they perform a PH adjustment that makes some of the denatured whey protein water soluble, as well as removing all of the insoluble, denatured whey protein portions through the filtration and/or centrifugal steps.

What they end up with is a water soluble whey protein, where all of the obvious denatured parts have been removed. They then do a very simpleton centrifuge test to show that less than 0.1% of the whey protein will centrifuge out as insoluble and they then have the audacity to make the claim that their whey protein is 99.9% undenatured. Then their customers (sports nutrition companies) make the same silly claim.

While it is true that 99.9% of their whey protein is water soluble, it is a bit more of a stretch to make the claim that their whey protein is 99.9% undenatured, many people confuse water solubility with denaturation qualities. The two are not the same. It is possible that a completely denatured protein will be water soluble and it is equally possible that a completely undenatured protein would centifuge out of water. Yet, because most nutrition marketers are simpletons (or at least think that their customers are simpletons) they make a silly claim like, "because our whey protein doesn't centrifuge out of water, it is undenatured". Truly if a whey protein is manufactured from cheese whey - it has been denatured. The manufacture may have removed the denatured parts to leave a water soluble portion of the total whey protein, but a good portion of that whey protein was denatured and lost in the processing. The only way a whey protein can be truly undenatured is if it is filtered directly from skimmed milk - no chemical changes in between and no heat pasteurisation over 60 degrees C. The whey protein in CNP Products meets those criteria, I sincerely doubt if there is another whey protein on the planet that is made directly from skimmed milk. To the best of my knowledge, all other whey proteins are derived from cheese whey. Ask them the source of their whey protein.

Undenatured protein is far superior than cheese whey. If it wasn't why are all these companies making these claims.

I have seen this too mate.

I have also seen ads for another company's protein blend owned by 6 times UK Mr O (he use to be with CNP, it's a copy of pro-peptide), which states they don't use cheese whey but is made in the UK in his own factory.

I don't see how as the only whey not made from cheese whey as far as I know is in some CNP products including Pro-Peptide and a company called Wellwisdom (a medical company) and is supplied by Phill C in the states.

So that one has lost me TBH.

John.

thanks for a detailed answer, which i can get my head around, unfortunately i dont think most joe public know the difference.most of it goes over peoples heads
i spend a bit of time on forums and cant believe the crap people buy.
people are being hypnotized by black majic
i know most compettive uk bodybuilders buy the beef,
this might be a good way to rebalance the vodoo-by addressing some of the absurd claims.
as a gym owner i could stick the articles around my gym for my customers to digest,
i will also post this today on jon-harris.net forum and spread the gospel,
people deserve the truth and to be stopped treated like simpletons

kk - You can't blame people not understanding and sometimes believing the hype but if they can't understand they should look at the companies and see who is behind them, our head of research and development Phil Connolly (I call him The Gifted One) developed Pro Peptide. Phil is the cleverest man I have ever met on nutrition and actually developed peptide bonded glutamine and micellar casein, these are common words in sports nutrition these days but they wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Phil. Here is his CV
