Hi Kerry,

I read a little article in todays Sun (Yeah I know) but I have seen this in other papers TBH.

They say not to eat anymore than 6 eggs a week. I have two a day so 14 a week. I know yolks contain fat but what is your take on how many yolks?

I know whole diet is key and it would depend on what other fat you have in your diet.

Cheers John.

I eat about ten eggs a day and 6 yolks and have done for years, some times i have double that, the fat in eggs is good fat

Yeah I thought most of the fat in yolks was good too Kez mate.

It's all the cholesterol debate going on from what I have read. I thought yolks didn't effect bad cholesterol levels. Most of the time it's just somthing to write about IMO. No disrespect to the "Sun" lol there are many articles on eggs stating they are bad and not to eat as many, when there are far worse things to eat IMO.

They also said that diabetics shouldn't eat as many but what has fat got to do with diabetes?

I think advertising eggs on tv was about to make a come back but was scraped recently (remember "go to work on an egg" I don't because I am to young lol)because of this and yet you see packaged cereals full of sugar and choc on childrens tv all the time. I don't know Crying

As I understand it eating eggs in normal heathy individuals is never going to be a problem! In fact your body produces more chlosterol naturally than you could ever eat! If you start comsuming alot of eggs your body will limit is production of natuarlly produced chlosterol to suit! Refined sugar is prehaps the most damaging thing to your health rather than a few eggs!

I have been eating six or more whole eggs a day for almost 15 years. As far as I can tell, I haven't died from it yet. If I do die from it though, I'll be sure to let you know right away.

I ate a dozen a day for years, but 4 or 5 yolks.

kk - I didn't read the article in the Sun as I never get past page 3 :-)

Having not read the article, I'll have to guess it was about cholesterol, of course eating excessive amounts of cholesterol is not good but this is dietary cholesterol, you body produces cholesterol and this is determined by your lifestyle. As most people on this site eat eggs as a protein source and they probably throw some of the yolks away, I wouldn't worry about it.

The most important thing is a balaced diet, that diet should contain lots of fruit, veg and more importantly fibre, this will more than counteract any problems (unless you have got a genetic disorder) with cholesterol. I think they should be screaming more about saturated fats.

One last thing, obviously don't fry your eggs.

Ok thanks kerry and to all that have had a say Big Smile

When you say "this is dietary cholesterol" from the eggs what does this mean, and what other forms of cholesterol are there? sorry if this sounds silly lol?

Some saturated fat is good for test levels I think they should be screaming about the Trans fats in packaged goods like cakes and choc ect which have no benefit at all.

One last thing why do you say not to fry my eggs?

I do time to time but I use a little olive oil in the frying pan, not bad fats. Is there another reason why I shouldn't fry them?

John.

Its just you might be tempted to throw in a few sausages, a few strips of bacon, some black pudding and some bread!

kk - Believe it or not the body needs cholesterol and most cholesterol in the body is synthesised. When you injest some cholestero that is known as dietary cholesterol. yes, i totally agree with you, they should be going on about transfats and processed foods.

Got some bad news for you mate, when you fry in good fat it changes the molecules of that fat and it can become a bad fat.

thats a bugger! I normally fry lean minced beef in a bit of olive oil if I'm making spag bol or chilli. What about adding olive oil into cooking as a means of adding good fats, so it is heated less directly?

Kerry I only put a very small amount of olive oil in the pan. I use a non-stick one.

Should I fry them without the oil then, would it be ok then? (I love fryed eggs in a morning with my Peptide and oats)

I have read this before about olive oil, turning into trans fats if they are expossed to VERY hot heat. what do you recommed using for cooking for example when I cook minced beef and onions in the wok I use a little olive oil then too.

Would "Pam spray" be a better option or a different fat?

Cheers again John.

I forgot to put that I use free-range eggs, so they are higher in 03 beacuse of the diet of the hen and that it has access to vegetation and sunlight.

I know organic would be best but they are too pricey for me.

It's just another point to make if you are consuming a fair amount of yolks a day, free-range or organic would be better than caged.

kk - Yeah you can use pam spray if you want but you can carry on using olive oil just dont think that the olive oil stays in its original chain.

Yes, again you are right, free range or organic eggs are far better than caged for the reasons you mentioned.
