Joe Murray aims for English title
22.11.10

MURRAY OUT TO GIVE A PASTA-RING TO ITALIAN ACE

JOE MURRAY insists he’ll be ready for his first professional title after sorting out David Chianella.

The Beijing Olympian will be bidding for his ninth straight professional win when he faces former Italian featherweight champion David Chianella at Bolton’s Reebok Stadium on Friday November 26.

Murray, 23, hasn’t lost a round since turning professional in March 2009 and believes he will soon be ripe for a shot at the vacant English nine stone crown.

Mancunian Murray said: “Once you have got ten professional fights under your belt you start looking at English titles and then moving onto the British and European stage

“You can see that prospects are being moved quicker these days because James DeGale fighting for the British title so early in his career.

“Boxing is getting like the UFC with fighters being matched harder sooner and Sky TV is also demanding exciting fights.

“I believe in my ability so that suits me and when my team say I am ready I know they will be making the right decision.”

Chianella, 37, has lost just seven times in 25 contests, but will be boxing outside his homeland for the first time in his career.

Heading the bill is Matthew Hatton who defends his European welterweight title against unbeaten Swiss star Roberto Belge.

Commonwealth middleweight champion Martin Murray aims to become a double champion when he tees off with Brazil’s former world title challenger Carlos Nascimento for the vacant WBA international crown

WINNING TEAM: Matthew Macklin, Joe Gallager and John Murray

June 5, 2008 stands out in the memory of Joe Gallagher – it was the last time he sent out a losing fighter.

Since Scott Sandmann’s first round stoppage by Adil more than two years ago, Gallagher has gone on to create a conveyor belt of success at his Denton gym, equalling the great Enzo Calzaghe’s record of 40 straight fights without defeat.

Dating back to John Murray’s fifth round knockout of Lee Meager in July 2008 to Joe Murray’s second stoppage of David Chianella last Friday night, Gallagher has known almost nothing but success over the last two and half years.

He will pass Calzaghe’s count if European champion, Matthew Macklin, successfully defends his crown against Ruben Varon a week on Saturday – Gallagher’s 12th consecutive title success.

“I didn’t realise how long the run had been going until someone asked me when the last time I lost was,” he said. “I then started to work it out and it was about 20-odd at that point.

“Then it started to build up in the gym. Every time one of fighters went out they were desperate not to be the one to lose the record. It’s given them an added incentive. They all want to keep it going.”

Along the way, Gallagher has led John Murray to British and European lightweight titles – the same with Macklin in the middleweight division.

In October he was in the corner as Anthony Crolla became English super-featherweight champion with a stunning seventh round stoppage Andy Morris – one of the fights of the year.

Gallagher still has some way to match Calzaghe’s achievements. Between 2005 and 2008 the father and trainer of undefeated super-middleweight champion, Joe, enjoyed 27 successive world title triumphs and his gym housed three world champions.

Gallagher is still waiting to train his first world champion, but in 2011 he hopes to do that with both Murray and Macklin.

“We’ve turned British titles into European titles, the next step is to turn European titles into world titles,” said the 42-year-old. “I think that can happen with John and Matthew.

“Anthony Crolla deserves a British title shot and Joe Murray will fight for his first title next year as well.

“The most pleasing part about the run is that so many of the fights have been for titles. And a in a lot of those our fighters were the underdogs, but we still came through.

“Enzo’s record is incredible and even if I go past it, he can rightly point to the amount of world title fights included in that run. But we’re getting
there as well "

Levenshulme's Joe Murray insists he is ready to fight for a title after blasting away David Chianelli.

The 2008 Olympian produced one of his best performances to date as he extended his unbeaten run to nine on the same bill.

"I went in against someone who had been in with champions and won convincingly," said Murray.

"It wasn’t just the win, but the way I won. I was picking off my shots accurately. It was probably my best performance yet.

"I think I’m ready for a title shot now. That’s nine unbeaten so I’d like to make it 10 for the title."

Murray simply had too much for the Italian, who had lasted 12 rounds with Paul Hyland when challenging for the vacant EU super-bantamweight title in March.

After pummelling the 37-year-old with powerful combinations in the first round, he wasted little time finishing him off in the second.

It was Murray’s fifth stoppage in his last six fights, showing how much he has matured since turning pro last year.

"A lot of people used to say I didn’t have any power, but my record speaks for itself," said the 23-year-old. "In my first few fights I was up against journeymen who don’t really come at you. But since I’ve started fighting people who are opening up, looking to hit you as well, you’ve seen my finishing power.

"I’m getting better all the time and I’m feeling stronger and stronger. When I first turned pro I was making some amateurish mistakes, diving in. But now I’m taking my time and making the most of my chances.

"I can’t wait to go for a title. I’ve not decided yet what weight I’m most comfortable at, super-bantam or featherweight. I’ll see what opportunities there are."

Murray’s performances are putting increasing pressure on promoter, Ricky Hatton, to get him a title shot in 2011.

The manner in which he disposed of Chianella and Richard Szebeledi before him is evidence enough of his growing confidence in the ring.

Trainer Joe Gallagher said: "He impresses every time he gets in that ring. He’s been given a lot testing fights for someone at this stage of his career, but he keeps coming through them.

"He was against a quality opponent. Chianella went all the way with Paul Hyland, so we’re not talking about a journeyman.

"Joe’s the forgotten Olympian, but if he carries on like this everyone is going to know him."

British Trainer of the Year:

Just over two years ago, Kerry Kayes handed over the keys of Billy Graham’s CNP-sponsored Phoenix Gym to Joe Gallagher, the space was renamed Gallagher’s Gym and became the home of a remarkable achievement in 2011 when Gallagher moved to 41-0 as a trainer – this run saw him nudge ahead of Enzo Calzaghe’s 40-0 record.

Gallagher’s run includes British, European and English title fights as well as a stack of amateur crowns. Still, the trainer is not satisfied, he recently told me that he will not rest until that winning record includes a world title win or two. Both John Murray and Matthew Macklin are highly rated and awaiting breakthrough fights, Gallagher believes that both boxers will bring home world titles in 2011 to keep that remarkable streak chugging along.

Joe has guided John and Joe Murray throughout their entire pro careers, Matthew Macklin is back in the fold, Anthony Crolla is firing and there are the likes of Liam Cullen, Mark Heffron and Danny Randall on their way through.

Maintaining a long undefeated run across different levels is a commendable achievement; an apt reward for the work put in by Gallagher and Kerry Kayes, experienced cuts man Mick Williamson completes the team.

Matthew Macklin aims for a better 2011
Jan 1 2011
by Ken Montgomery, Birmingham Mail
Add a commentRecommend MATTHEW Macklin didn’t exactly leave 2010 in a blaze of glory, despite successfully defending his European title.

But he plans to make 2011 a firework spectacular to remember – netting a world title.

Brummie Macklin has a commitment to defend the European belt against arch-rival Darren Barker and will honour that if he has to.

But he has higher hopes of making a name for himself in the world status of the middleweight division.

Matthew Macklin’s time has come and he is ready to make the most of it.

He said: “In my career I have had a lot of different trainers, promoters and managers and I have learned a lot from every one.

“I have enjoyed some of the best sparring in the world at some of the best gyms and I know that I am ready to burst on to the world scene.

“My present promoter, Frank Warren, has promised he will get me that world title chance and he is a man of his word. And I will be ready for it.

“Sebastian Sylvester is the IBF champion and he is very much on my radar. He defends his title in Germany on January 22 against Frenchman Mehdi Bouadla and I would be delighted to take on the winner.

“Sylvester should have enough power to overcome Bouadla, who is moving down from the super-middleweight division.

“The winner should be ready to make his defence around April time and that would fit in with my plans if the fight can be made.

“I also understand that WBC champion Sergio Martinez has been booked to defend in March against an opponent yet to be named.

‘‘The same applies to WBA champion Germany’s Felix Sturm, who has a date in February in Stuttgart against an opponent to be named.

“As far as I know the WBO champion Dmitry Pirog has no plans to defend his belt but I am rated in the top ten of all the sections and would relish a match against any one of the champions.

“And if they look at my last performance they would undoubtedly relish a match against me. I wasn’t at my best defending the European title against Spaniard Ruben Varon.

“I won the fight easily enough but I got badly beaten up when it shouldn’t have happened.

“I wasn’t fully prepared and the match didn’t hold any excitement for me.

“I have shown that I am always at my best when I am facing the best. I also showed that a true champion always finds the way to win.’’

Stand by for another golden year for British boxing.

If you thought 2010 was good – with four British world champions – it’s only going to get better over the next 12 months.

And I believe Salford’s European super-featherweight champion Steve Foster Jr will be one of those becoming a global success in 2011.

Manchester is hardly short of contenders for world crowns between now and the end of the – John Murray, Matthew Hatton and Matthew Macklin all hoping to step up from the European scene.

But that is easier said than done.

Becoming a world champion can be about facing the right man at the right time.

Murray, Hatton and Macklin all find themselves in red-hot divisions.

Hatton dreams of emulating his brother, Ricky, by becoming a world champion, yet the welterweight division is home to two of the greatest fighters of all time in pound-for-pound kings Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Then there’s Miguel Cotto – not to mention Britain’s own golden boy, Kell Brook.

Hatton longs for a clash with WBA champion, Viacheslav Senchenko, but that’s a daunting enough task on its own, should the fight ever get the go-ahead.

Murray shares a division with one of the all-time great lightweights in Juan Manuel Marquez, as well as the big-hitting Michael Katsidis, while Macklin has Sergio Martinez, Felix Sturm and Sebastian Sylvester standing in the way of his world title hopes.

Foster, though, will have his sights firmly on Britain’s WBO champion, Ricky Burns.

That is one of the fights I’d most like to see over the next 12 months. A thrilling all-British encounter with world honours at stake.

Last year was the year that Foster stepped back out of the wilderness with a stunning third round knockout of Levan Kirakosyan to claim the European crown.

And he will believe he can now go on to better that in a Battle of Britain with Burns.

It is all about getting his chance – which is a similar position to my own fighters, Murray and Macklin.

Both men are in the top 10 in their respective divisions and both are avoided fighters.

I am confident that both have the ability to become world champions – but we know we will have to force our way into a position for a title shot.

As of now both will be ready and waiting for that call.

Short of being mandatory challengers, we’ve accepted that neither will get 12 weeks notice to fight for a world title.

For both men the likelihood is that they will have to be late stand-ins should any opponents drop out. And that’s what we’re going to prepare for.

Give either man their chance and they will seize it.

But this isn’t just a golden period for Manchester boxing, but British boxing on a whole.

Amir Khan, David Haye, Carl Froch and Burns are all world champions.

By the end of the year I confidently predict there could be at least half a dozen world crowns on these shores.

Welterweight Brook is knocking on the door of a world title shot, while Nathan Cleverley is one of Britain’s most exciting prospects.

Then there’s James DeGale, who was so impressive when beating British super-middleweight champion Paul Smith in December.

DeGale versus rival George Groves is one of the fights I’m desperate to see before the year is out.

They may not all be looking for world titles, but I also predict another successful year at my own gym (pictured).

In Olympian Joe Murray and English super-featherweight champion Anthony Crolla I have two of the most exciting fighters in the country. Murray is now 9-0 after stepping into the professional ranks and he will hold his first title by the end of the year.

In Crolla, I have a fighter who is getting better and better.

He’s making a real name for himself after impressive wins against Michael Brodie and Andy Morris in the last two years – and is now just one fight away from a shot at British champion, Gary Sykes.

While that is a fight I’m desperate to see – like the rest of the world, I’ve got everything crossed that Pacquiao and Mayweather will finally get in the ring together.

Both men have made a lot of money from boxing and now it’s time to give back with the fight the world wants to see.

The longer the two best fighters in the sport stay apart, the more damage they are doing to the reputation of boxing.

Now it’s time to put up or shut up.

Either get it on – or get out of the sport for good.

Happy New Year!

Frank Warren wants to make John Murray Britain’s next boxing superstar.

The legendary promoter believes Murray has what it takes to become his next world champion having already masterminded the careers of some of the sport’s biggest names.

Warren made global stars out of Ricky Hatton, Nigel Benn, Joe Calzaghe, Amir Khan and Prince Naseem – leading all of them to world titles.

Last year Ricky Burns became his latest world champion, winning the WBO super-featherweight crown, and now he believes Murray can go on to do likewise.

The undefeated European lightweight champion is a free agent after parting company with former promoter Mick Hennessey. He is considering his options as he looks to crack the world stage in 2011 – targeting lightweight king Juan Manuel Marquez and WBC champion Humberto Soto.

Warren believes he is the man to take the 26-year-old from Levenshulme to the next stage after seeing him blow away every domestic and European rival put in front of him.

“I think if he gets the right promotion then he could be one of the next stars,” said Warren. “He’s got the talent, he’s got a good trainer and good people behind him. He just needs somebody to help on the other side of the ropes.

“He’s been waiting for that big chance. I’d like to get involved. I think he’s a talent.

“You can only make stars out of people who can fight and if there’s one thing about him it’s that he can fight.”

Murray’s career is still waiting for lift off, despite an impressive record so far.

He boasts the longest undefeated record in Britain – with 30 fights – holds the European title and recently vacated the British crown after winning the Lonsdale belt outright.

His last six bouts have all been won by knockout, earning him a reputation as one of the most exciting fighters to come from this country since Hatton.

Warren was behind Hatton’s career-defining fight at the MEN Arena against Kostya Tszyu in 2005, which saw the Hitman become IBF light-welterweight champion and global name.

In 2009 Warren led Khan to the WBA light-welterweight title at the same venue as the Bolton star out-pointed Andriy Kotelnik.

Warren, who recently celebrated 30 years in the sport, believes Murray can become the M.E.N.’s next sell-out success.

“I think John and Ricky have different styles entirely,” he said. “Ricky built a big fanbase and was well-promoted, even if I do say so myself. John needs that as well.

“He needs the promotion to help build a big fanbase.

“Manchester’s looking for its next star. They need to get some shows going on at the M.E.N. again. It would be a great thrill and a pleasure to be back in Manchester.”

Murray is waiting to find out who he will take on next after successfully defending his European crown against Andriy Kudryavtsev with a ninth round stoppage last September.

He dreams of a clash with WBA and WBO champion Marquez but has been told he will have to wait before he can take on the world’s biggest names.

Roberto Diaz, who is the chief matchmaker at US promoter Golden Boy, says he still needs to build a name Stateside.

“A fight against Marquez? No,” he said. “There’s nothing in it for Marquez and everything for John. Marquez versus Khan, maybe. He’s a big name and there is the chance of a title in a fourth division.

“John needs to build his name in America first. I can see him fighting Victor Ortiz or Robert Guerrero – younger guys – because TV would buy it. But pay per view won’t buy it.”

A clash with former WBO interim champion Michael Katsidis is a possibility this year or a mouth-watering battle of Britain with Kevin Mitchell who is already promoted by Warren.

Meanwhile, Murray found himself in an unlikely position of third in a list behind the late Tony Curtis and Clint Eastwood in a recent competition.

A picture of Murray, taken by freelance photographer Chris Bevan was a bronze medal-winner in the British Institute of Professional Photographers awards for 2010. Bevan said: “John has a natural charisma that comes through and I got a great shot.”

Joe Gallagher

Joe Gallagher’s incredible 12 months just got better with the Denton trainer named British boxing coach of the year.

Gallagher, who takes charge of John and Joe Murray, Matthew Macklin and Anthony Crolla, was handed the prestigious title by top US boxing website, BoxingScene.com.

His award came in recognition of an outstanding 2010 that saw his fighters win two European titles and one English crown.

The MEN Sport columnist also passed legendary trainer, Enzo Calzaghe’s record of 40 straight fights without defeat, taking his own total to 41.

BoxingScene’s Terrence Dooley said: “Gallagher’s run includes British, European and English title fights, as well as a stack of amateur crowns.

“Maintaining a long undefeated run across different levels is a commendable achievement.”

Under Gallagher’s guidance John Murray has built up the longest undefeated record in Britain right now with 30 straight wins.

Murray won the European lightweight title last year, while Macklin regained his European middleweight belt.

Gallagher made it a hat-trick of titles when leading Crolla to an English super-featherweight title success against Andy Morris in October.

But he says he’s looking for even more success in 2011.

“I’m not satisfied and neither are my fighters,” he said. “Like all the best managers and coaches in sport I believe you should quickly put success behind you and focus on the next target.

“I want to make John Murray and Matthew Macklin world champions, Anthony Crolla and Joe Murray British champions. But it’s not just the pros in the gym – we’ve had great success with amateurs like Hosea and Zak Burton.

“Success breeds success.

“It was a great achievement to get to 41-0 and I’ve got a lot of stick about it and whether I can make it 50. I want to do that by challenging for world titles.

“But I couldn’t do any of it without the help of my team. Kerry Kayes has been a brilliant supporter since I took over the gym and Mick Williamson is the best cutsman in the business.”

Macklin signs with Golden Boy and gets Winky Wright match
As soon as news came through last week that Hennessy Sports had won the purse bids to stage one of the most anticipated domestic matches of the year - Darren Barker v Matthew Macklin - the consensus amongst those who know even a little about boxing politics was that European champion Macklin would suddenly go a different route. In saying that, I doubt very much Macklin's alternative opposition was considered by anyone - one of the best boxers of his generation, Ronald 'Winky' Wright - or that Macklin would sign, as is being reported in America, a multi-fight deal with Golden Boy Promotions.

Wright has not fought since April 2009 when he lost a wide points decision against Paul Williams. The proposed non-title bout will, according to GBP boss Richard Schaefer, take place on April 9th at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, as part of the undercard to Juan Manuel Marquez versus, perhaps, Erik Morales.

"The winner clearly is set up for a middleweight world championship fight," Schaefer told Dan Rafael of ESPN.com. "For each guy this is an extremely important fight.

"I think the story here is that you have Matthew Macklin, who has worked himself up the rankings and put together a pretty impressive streak of wins and now is considered one of the best contenders from Europe, so for him this is a big step up.

"A win over Winky Wright will make him a serious contender for the one of the world titles.

"For Winky Wright to come back and fight against an opponent like Matthew Macklin shows he is serious about coming back. If he wins, he's in line for one of the middleweight world titles. Winky understands this won't be an easy fight, but he also knows if he wins, he is perfectly positioned. Winky didn't want just a tune-up fight."

Closing in on the end of his career, middleweight contender Ronald "Winky" Wright (51-5, 25KOs) returns for the first time in two years when he faces EBU champion Matthew Macklin (28-2, 19KOs) on April 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The former undisputed junior middleweight champion spoke with Suge Green of OnTheGrind Boxing Radio and gave his reason for accepting a fight with Macklin after two years of being inactive, and explained why he turned Macklin down last year.

"Nobody wanted to fight. At that time we were trying to look for something bigger and better. And it wouldn't happen. Nobody wanted to step up and give me the opportunity. Eventually, this fight came about again. And I said, well, if this is the only person we can get, then we have to take it. That's what it is," Wright said.

This is the final run for Wright, 39-years-old. If he loses to Macklin, then he might finally retire from the sport. He knows the fight is dangerous because Golden Boy Promotions recently signed Macklin and could be using his established name to build the British fighter up in the United States.

"That could be the case [on Golden Boy building him up], but If I want to get back and prove that I'm still one of the best fighters in my weight division, then I have to fight the best. I could easly come back and fight a bum or a stiff. Its not like there's a lot of money in this fight. Its not like they are paying me a lot of money in this fight. But if I want to prove that I'm the best, then I have to fight the best. Macklin is European champ. He's a good fighter. If can't beat him, then maybe its time to hang it up," Wright said.

Carl Johanneson eased into a British super-featherweight title eliminator with English title-holder Anthony Crolla – who will also defend his belt – by posting an eight-round shutout points win over South Shields’s George Watson at the Doncaster Dome.

Johanneson, 30-4 (19), looked his usual methodic self, stalking Watson around the ring and landing booming rights as the fight progressed. Carl had looked imperious at the British title level during 2006 but lost his way when vying for the EBU belt against Levan Kirakosyan in July 2007.

In what was largely a rust shedding exercise, Carl showed glimpses of his intimidating form of old during the Watson win; underlining the performance by flooring his man heavily with a left hook to the body late in round seven.

Watson, who fell to 8-3-2 (1), got on his bicycle in the final session, seeking to wind the clock down and protect his slender ribcage. Although bloodied, Watson was very much unbowed by the final bell, picking up valuable experience from sharing the ring with a former British champion.

Carl, 32, looked full of life, he takes on Manchester’s Crolla at Bolton’s Reebok Stadium on February 26 and will have to roll back the years once again to halt Crolla’s recent surge.

“I’m not at my best yet. I just want to get the rounds under my belt and get ready for Crolla. I’m ready, I hope he’s ready, and it could be the fight of the year,” revealed Carl when speaking to Sky Sports, the Yorkshireman delivered a FOTY once before when losing his British title to Kevin Mitchell in 2008.

“Carl will bring power, I will bring excitement and it will certainly be a candidate for fight of the year 2011. I won’t be denied a shot at the British title,” answered Crolla.

John Murray is being considered as an opponent for Amir Khan's next fight, according to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer.

Khan is returning to the UK after making two successful defences of his WBA light-welterweight title in America against Paulie Malignaggi and Marcos Maidana.

Lamont Peterson, who failed to wrestle the WBO title from Timothy Bradley in 2009, was initially considered to be the most likely opponent, but no deal has been reached.

Elsewhere, Paul McCloskey has ruled himself out after snubbing the money on offer, leaving Murray as a viable option. The European lightweight champion, who carries a 30-0 record, is looking to make a mark on the world scene - and Khan may grant him his wish.

Asked who Khan would face in April, Schaefer told Boxingscene: "We're still working that out. Lamont Peterson is still in the race. There are a couple of other guys, and we hope that within the next 24 to 48 hours we'll have that done. John Murray has been mentioned. We just have to work it a little bit more and see where we end up."

Meanwhile, Dereck Chisora insists he has left no stone unturned as he prepares to face Wladimir Klitschko on April 30. "I know him better than [his brother] Vitali does now and believe me, I've seen some weaknesses I'm going to exploit," he said.

Smith Brothers join Gallaghers Gym

Paul 'Smigga' Smith and his younger brother Stephen 'Swifty' Smith are set to join forces with BoxingScene's British Trainer of the Year award winner Joe Gallagher. 'Smigga' is eager to get his championship career back on track in the wake of a ninth-round British super-middleweight title defeat to James DeGale, who showed dazzling ability and maturity to rip the belt from Smith at the ECHO Arena, Liverpool on December 11th.

Smith previously trained in Liverpool under Georgie and Stephen Vaughan, he is now going to switch his training base to Gallagher's Denton-based gym. Ironically, the 28-year-old trained in the same gymnasium when it was the home of Billy Graham's Phoenix camp; he may feel that a return to his old stomping ground, not to mention the presence of nutritionist Kerry Kayes, who owns the building, is just the tonic ahead of another title push.

'Swifty' is riding the wave of his first title win, a victory over Scotland's Commonwealth boss John Simpson up in Glasgow last September. The 25-year-old won ABA titles in 2006 and 2007, he has been out with a hand injury since the win over Simpson but is back in the gym.

Paul who holds a 29-2 (15) record; Stephen is 11-0 (6); they join fellow pros John and Joe Murray, Matthew Macklin, Anthony Crolla, Liam Cullen, Mark Heffron and 2010 NACYP national title winner Marcus Morrison, with Gallagher hoping for more new arrivals, not to mention a few amateurs turning over, as the year rolls on.

Joe has compiled a 41-0 run in recent years. Possible world title opportunities for Macklin, set to take on Winky Wright in Las Vegas this May, and John Murray are just around the corner, Gallagher could soon be locking horns with the best trainers in the world as he seeks to continue his personal run of form.

“Smith, like Macklin and John, is a wise bull who can inspire the young fighters. Manchester United have got their old heads like Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs, now we've got these guys to help bring the younger pros through,” said Gallagher when confirming the Smiths arrival.

He added: “Paul has worked with top-class trainers such as Billy Graham and the Vaughans, he's also been across the pond and worked with Buddy McGirt; he's got a lot of experience and a lot to offer. Having Paul here is great for someone like Macklin and great for the craic and banter in the gym. Stephen's got great potential and it will be great to have them around the gym. We're going to have a busy year and all these lads are amongst the titles.”

Gallagher believes that his stable is not given the recognition it deserves, partly due to the fact that his gym is so mixed. Murray fought under Mick Hennessy in recent years; Matthew Macklin was with Ricky Hatton, then allegedly and is now a Golden Boy fighter; Joe Murray is guided by Hatton Promotions; both Smiths are with Warren. Gallagher feels that it is easier to gain recognition if your gym is attached to a promotional company.

“I feel its because we're not with a single promoter,” answers Gallagher when asked about his proactive approach to grabbing press exposure for his guys. “Adam Booth is with Hayemaker so George Groves benefits from that association with David Haye. Robert McCracken trains a lot of Mick Hennessy's fighters. allegedly has a few trainers who work with his lads. I've got fighters from all the promoters. We've got a good mix but don’t always get the credit. We're not chasing the dough, we're chasing the titles and the fact the gym is so mixed means that people might not give us the recognition they'd give us if all the fighters were with one promoter.”

Gallagher’s biggest blow in recent times came when Tony ‘Jaffa’ Jeffries left the gym in 2009, citing a lack of face time with Joe as the reason for his switch; the trainer, though, maintains that he spreads his attention equally between all of his fighters. However, he does admit that he is bearing a massive workload.

“This type of workload is heavy for anyone, a lot of trainers have a load of assistants and the assistants have assistants to the assistant but in our gym it just me, the team and the lads – Kerry Kayes's advice, nutrition and CNP's sponsorship plays a big part of the success of this gym, as well as the presence of Mick Williams, the best cutsman in the world, on fight nights,” admitted Gallagher.

“We've a good stable, amateurs like [2010 Junior ABA champion] Zac and [2009 ABA winner] Hosea Burton bring quality and there is always room for quality fighters at Gallagher's Gym – the Burton's are the future of the gym. The lads spar with pros and they are getting the man strength they need to go further.”

Mark Heffron has motored to 4-0 (3 early) since turning over in September of last year; he won a Junior ABA title and silver at the European Youth Championships. Gallagher believes that Heffron has the potential to emulate Ricky Hatton, who boxed out of the same premises during his peak years.

“Mark Heffron is just starting out and he’s a really exciting prospect; he's got huge potential and could do for Oldham what Ricky Hatton did for Manchester. Mark's turned over at the same age as John did and he can look at John and see where he can be in a few years,” he enthused.

“All the lads push each other on the runs, on the circuits and they've got good banter between them. Older guys like John, Macklin and Paul see themselves in Stephen, Crolla and Heffron, it reminds them of when they were younger and hungry for titles, and that there are guys out there who want to take their titles and rankings from them. This gym is bursting, it is fantastic right now and these amateurs are training alongside ranked fighters and they are all picking up that little bit of gold dust – I don't have a jewel in the crown, I have a crown full of jewels. We believe in the work we are doing and that the results speak for themselves.”

Marquez V Murray ??

There is still no deal for Juan Manuel Marquez to fight Erik Morales on April 9 in Las Vegas. Marquez's team have revealed that John Murray (30-0, 18KOs) of England and Ray Narh (24-1, 21KOs) of Ghana are also possible candidates if no deal is met for Morales.

The WBC has revealed that Golden Boy Promotions made a request to have them sanction Marquez-Morales as a fight for the organization's "Diamond Belt."

"I have not had the opportunity to meet with [manager/trainer] Nacho Beristain, but we have not closed the door to anyone," Marquez told Sal Rodriguez. "We will analyze the proposals. I have not ruled Morales out but a lot of details have yet to be reached, especially the economic, but let's see. The fight is not signed as many would say but we are still in negotiations."

Beristain is confident the fight with Morales will be made but also said - "Of the options they gave to Juan, you can add the Englishman John Murray and Ray Nahr of Africa. Both are dangerous but we have to wait for HBO's approval."

Million $ Crolla v Watson British Lightweight Title

Gavin Rees out, Watson and Crolla for British belt?

By Terence Dooley

Matchroom have revealed that former WBA light-welterweight title-holder Gavin Rees has been forced to pull out of his February 16 British lightweight title defence against John Watson due to a nose injury, Anthony Crolla will now take on Watson with the British belt at stake pending confirmation of the contest by the BBBoC. Matchroom have submitted a bid to make the Watson-Crolla fight and hope that this contest will be confirmed by the board early next week, Rees will vacate as he seeks to return to full fighting fitness.

Rees won the WBA’s version of the 140lb world title by out-pointing Souleymane M'baye in 2007. However, ‘The Rock’ lost his title to Andriy Kotelnik in March of the following year. Rees was brave but brutally out-boxed and then out-gunned in that one, he was stopped at 2:34 of the twelfth and final round. Gavin took some time off before bursting back onto the scene by winning Prizefighter: The Light-welterweights in December 2009. Gavin, though, had stated that his long-term future lay down at lightweight, he captured the British title vacated by EBU boss John Murray by stopping Watson, then-undefeated, in the eleventh round of last year’s domestic FOTY candidate.

A Rees-Watson rematch was on the cards for February 12th. Watson, 13-1 (5 stoppages), now headlines the Matchroom bill, which takes place at the Olympia, Liverpool, in a North West derby showdown against 'Million Dollar' Crolla.

Although a super-feather, Crolla, 19-2 (7 early), has been chomping at the bit for a British title shot and is happy to make the move to 135lb as the main domestic belt is on the line. Ironically, the 24-year-old will be vying for a title previously held by his stablemate John Murray. Anthony, the current English super-featherweight titlist, was due to defend his belt against Carl Johanneson on February 26th but is happy to forgo that one to fight for the most prestigious prize in British boxing, that handsome Lonsdale belt.

Watson arguably learned more from the Rees fight than all his other fights combined, the Dave Coldwell-trained fighter dished out a lot of damage himself that night; the 27-year-old was not found wanting and will be twice the fighter this time around.

Ticket information for the Watson-Crolla clash can be obtained by dropping a line to info@matchroom.com or by phoning the Matchroom office on +44 1277 359900.

John Murray signs with Frank Warren

By Terence Dooley

John Murray has inked a promotional deal with Frank Warren. Murray holds the longest current undefeated run in British boxing, 30-0 (18 early), as well as the EBU lightweight title; the 26-year-old was guided by Mick Hennessy until October of last year but has now joined forces with Warren. The veteran promoter confirmed the deal earlier today.

“John is a tremendous talent and I'm thrilled that he's joined my organisation,” said Warren. “I've always thought highly of him and what he needs now is the right promotion and guidance to turn him into a star and that's what I aim to do. He can fight and I believe that with his no-nonsense, all-action, style, he can be the man to get Manchester's boxing scene going again.”

Murray previously held the WBC Youth as well as English and British lightweight titles; he is rated #3 in the WBC rankings and is number six in The Ring's ratings. John believes that joining forces with Warren will enable him to fulfil his world title ambitions. “Yeah, I've signed a deal with Frank and I'm over the moon,” confirmed Murray.

“This is what I've been looking for. Mick's done a fantastic job with me over the past five years but he hasn't got a Sky TV deal at the moment [Writer's note: Mick's February 19th show is being televised live by the subscription channel Premier Sports]. Frank can put me out there and he's tried and tested, showing that he can bring people to titles time and time again. I think he can do the same job with me. Frank will deliver the fights so I've just got to go out there and win. It is going to be a huge couple of years.

“I've boxed on a couple of big bills in the States [wins over Lorenzo Bethea and Miguel Angel Munguia] and at the MEN [against Matthew Burke in 2003] but I've done my fair share of leisure centre shows and am ready for the next step. Frank can help me make that step into the big arenas – I'm looking forward to it.”

Golden Boy were interested in signing the Manchester-based contender; they offered him the opportunity to fight Victor Ortiz up at light-welterweight. John, though, believes that his long-term future lies at lightweight, he was keen to ink a deal with his new promoter in order to fight marquee names in his natural weight division.

“I'd rather go with Frank rather than people who haven't got the same track record,” stated Murray. “Frank's proved that he's the best promoter in Britain and has done it consistently over the years. He can deliver the opportunities and I know I can take them.

“If you can't get up for a fight in an arena in front of tens of thousands of people then you're in the wrong game. Frank will get me those big crowds and I'll make sure that I put a show on. [Michael] Katsidis is one guy I've been after for a bit because he's a well-known fighter, an exciting fighter and it would be a great battle that would put my name on the world map. I've won every title on the way through and the world title is the only thing lacking on my CV. If I do get the opportunity then I won't let anyone down.”

Joe Gallagher, Murray's trainer, believes that the move is a significant step towards his charge's world title destiny. Indeed, Gallagher always felt that John would eventually join forces with Warren. “It is a moment we've waited for since John was a fifteen-year-old amateur,” stressed Gallagher.

“Frank and Ricky Hatton were banging out arenas and it was a great inspiration to kids like John. Murray can follow in the same footsteps and is now guided by the promoter who took Ricky to the top. Frank is the best promoter in the world and he's got a huge list of achievements.

“Frank knows how to time things: he got a successful world title shot for Frank Bruno, he brought Kostya Tszyu over and Jeff Lacy as well as the likes of [Gerald] McClellan at the right time. Frank's brought big crowds to Wembley, he brought Prince Naz and Ricky to big crowds at the MEN and brought Amir Khan back after that loss to Prescott. John has done things the hard way, he's in a great position with the governing bodies and Frank can get him opportunities – look at what he did with Kevin Mitchell after only two fights at lightweight. We need that kind of clout to bring more world titles to Britain.

“Frank's record says it all, he develops fighters and can bring them up from scratch or take guys on and bring them chances. The man in the street always asks you if your fighters are with Warren because people know that all the best fighters are with Frank. I've worked with people who are casual fans and they gauge a fighter by whether he's with Warren.

“John is the best lightweight in Europe and Frank can make him a headline act, he revived the Manchester scene before and has done the same with the Liverpool scene and Birmingham. We can't wait to bring titles back to inner-city Manchester with John.”

Gallagher has long-maintained that his charge is boxing's next big breakout star. “Making John a recognised face is one of the key things with John signing with Frank,” says Gallagher. “The man in the street needs to know who John is, Frank can do that for him. Look what he's doing for Nathan Cleverly in such a short time. Mick got John some fantastic opportunities boxing across the world and was instrumental in John getting to where he is and we're grateful for that but Frank can give John the platform to go on and make a name for himself. Frank stages PPV events and world title events.

“John wouldn't have let anyone down if he had got [Michael] Katsidis last year at a big football stadium in front of tens of thousands of people, he'd have been bang on with it and just wants that type of opportunity. A lot of people in the trade will echo my sentiments, they are very happy that John has gone with Frank. Cleverly is currently in a great position and it shows that Frank can deliver. People within the trade rate John Murray. The likes of Jamie Moore and Rendall Munroe say that they love to watch him fight. I can't wait to see him show his ability to the general boxing public.”

Despite rumours of a Kevin Mitchell fight in March, there are no immediate plans. Murray is waiting on news of his next opponent; he will keep an eye on the big world title contests in coming months to ready himself for possible future fights against the likes of Brandos Rios and Humberto Soto. Kevin Mitchell is not on the radar just yet as the Londoner has not fought since his May 2010 reverse to Katsidis.

“No, we've not spoken about specific fights yet but we'll be keeping our eye on the world scene,” enthused Gallagher. “Brandos Rios fights WBA holder Miguel Acosta later this month and [WBC boss] Soto rematches Urbano Antillion in May. You've also got [Juan Manuel] Marquez free now because he is not fighting [Erik] Morales. John's in a good position for those type of fights. The likes of Mitchell got to fight for world titles and he wasn't talking about John at that time. I hope that Kevin rebuilds at lightweight, we can go out and get a world title and make a fight with him down the line.”

He added: “The world title is John's Holy Grail. Katsidis keeps raising his game and Marquez keeps turning back the clock. But I feel that the right fighter at the right time can do them both and that fighter that could be Murray. Marquez's people mentioned John's name on Boxingscene last week, that is great for John. John's done everything asked of him. We want him in those big arenas because I was worried that he might lose a bit of that buzz and begin to plateau. Signing a deal with Frank will push him over the finishing line, it is a massive boost for him as a fighter.”

Murray's desire to test himself against the best is shared by his long-term mentor. Gallagher enjoys jousting with the best trainers in Britain yet yearns for the opportunity to go head-to-head with the world's premier coaches.

“I went into pro training to pit my wits against names like Nacho Beristein, Buddy McGirt, Freddie Roach and Dan Birmingham. But especially Freddie as he's the top man right now. I want that challenge. We've done that in Britain and it would be great to do the same on the world stage.”

On Saturday night there was a cold breeze in the 106 year old former circus arena that is now Liverpool's Olympia. It seemed the heating must have packed in a long time ago at the old Locarno.

But when Anthony Crolla and John Watson's fight erupted around 9.30pm, the heat indoors was red hot and the two brave warriors who battled for the British lightweight title did the famous Lonsdale Belt proud in a terrific fight.

Manchester's 'Million Dollar' Crolla, systematically took apart John Watson and broke him down for nine rounds, before finishing the home fighter with a right hook, putting an end to this small hall classic in devastating fashion.

Crolla stepped into this fight with just two weeks notice, while preparing for a defence of his English super-featherweight title, which was also going to double as an eliminator for the British belt in that division. But with Gavin Rees pulling out of his rematch with Watson and vacating the strap. Crolla was offered this shot at the Lonsdale belt in the division above his, it took him less than 10 seconds to say 'Yes please'.

Crolla and his teams decision proved to be a stroke of great professional judgement. Crolla's trainer and student of boxing, Joe Gallagher set about devising a game plan to break down the bigger Watson and Crolla who came into the fight as the underdog carried out the instructions to the letter.

Crolla proudly wears his Lonsdale belt
The fight was primed from the beginning to be an encounter for the purists, it had the Liverpool, Manchester derby twist to it and these two old fashioned type pugilists didn't disappoint the northwest boxing crowd.

Crolla was initiating the attacks and forced the pace from the start of the fight from behind a tight high defence, he was able to stay in range of Watson's own work, tucking up well and willing to take what the scouser had to give, in order to land his own telling shots of which he was putting together with great effect to Watson's head and body.

There was a confident look from Crolla before and during the fight and you sensed that he was not going to be denied on the night he had the chance to achieve his life long dream of winning a British championship belt. If a fighter ever came of age before your eyes, then this was it. Crolla's battles of the past and the disappointments in his career have all helped him become a fighter of real substance.
Watson certainly had his own successes in the fight and made Crolla dig deep into his resolve to come through the gum shield biting moments that eventually separated these two gladiators into a winner and loser. Crolla's intensity and his sheer will to win was starting to wear down Watson and after a smashing 6th round that had the fans on their feet and encroaching the ring to get closer to the action. The round had took more out of Watson than Crolla and it seemed from here on in, that the Mancunian knew he had his opponents number.

After the midway point Crolla's tactics changed and he began to pick off and knock back the head of a disorganised Watson who was really starting to feel the fast pace set by a composed Crolla who started to pick his moments to land on an open Watson, who was being driven past his pain threshold by his home crowd and fighting spirit.

In the 9th round Crolla again upped the pace doubling up his jab and looking to drop in the big right hand that he eventually did. Crolla backed Watson to the ropes and smartly stepped forward with his right foot, leaned to Watsons left and immediately threw a right hook from a southpaw stance, that crashed off Watson's jaw sending him to the canvas at 2.35 of the round.

The referee didn't take up the count and waved the fight over so the ringside medical team of doctors could administer first aid to Watson. For a few agonising minutes he lay on the canvas to the worry of everyone in the arena. When Watson rose to his feet and waved to the crowd to let them know he was ok, they all joined in sync Mancs and scousers to show there relief and respect for what had just took place.

The Gallagher gym in Manchester already boasts the best lightweight in the country, former holder of the British title himself and current unbeaten European champion John Murray a training and sparring partner for Crolla. The manner of Crolla's performance against Watson, sometimes mirrored the style and intensity of a Murray one and the experience of sparring with his world rated gym mate will have all added to his portfolio.

Gallagher boxing team celebrate Crolla's title win
Crolla looks like he will have to make the first defence of his newly won belt against Gavin Rees and that again would be a good one. But there was a lot in Crollas boxing at the Olympia on Saturday night to suggest that he is a force to be reckoned with at lightweight. He has the look of a contented man confident in his fitness and boxing ability, who is willing to go in the trenches of boxing warfare when needed. He proved in his last fight against Andy Morris that he has what it takes to go through the barrier, claim a second wind and triumph through adversity. These gifts were to serve him well again here and can take him a long way in his chosen graft. Anthony 'Million Dollar' Crolla, the New British Lightweight Champion... It couldn't have happened to a nicer chap. Undercard results

JOHN MURRAY has the longest unbeaten record in British boxing and he intends to make sure it lands him a world title shot before the end of this year.

Mancunian Murray faces Karim El Ouazghari in a third defence of his European lightweight crown next week in London, determined to prove he is worthy of a shot at global glory.

Murray, who has been a pro since 2003, secured the British title three years ago but has been frustrated as other fighters have leapfrogged him. “Through no fault of my own I seem to have been left aside,” said Murray, who has just joined Frank Warren’s stable of fighters.

“My promoter has a track record in getting world title fights and that is what I want. I am not looking any further than my next opponent as my focus has to be on him, but after that it has got to be a world title challenge with one of the big names. I would fight any of them and would love to be in the ring challenging for a title by the end of this year. I am 26, so I have to cash in.”

Murray, with a 30-0 record and who has stopped his past six foes, has been linked with Juan Manuel Marquez and would gladly get in a ring with the Mexican legend.

It would be a privilege just to share the ring with someone like Marquez
John Murray

“It would be a privilege just to share the ring with someone like Marquez,” he said. “But down the line I’d love to fight Amir Khan.”

As for El Ouazghari, Murray is stepping largely into the unknown. “I have only seen one fight of his on video when he sparked out his opponent, so I know he can punch,” he said. “But I am in a hurry. And that means El Ouazghari followed by maybe one more European defence, then the world title.”

Posters for Murray’s bout feature his Jack Nicholson smile from the film The Shining. He said: “I look so much like Jack that it is untrue. Now I have to go out and deliver a performance to back it up.”

Murray-El Ouazghari is live on Sky Sports on April 2.

Naseem Hamed's light-heavyweight prospect Callum Johnson has joined up with Joe Gallagher. Johnson is managed by Naz and will now box out of the CNP-sponsored Gallagher's Gym as he bids to make good on his amateur promise. Johnson won Gold at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi and has since moved to 2-0 (1) as a pro. The Lincolnshire boxer is popular up in Scotland, where his two paid outings have taken place, but has made the decision to relocate his training base to Manchester.

Joe was enthused about the possible move when speaking to me about Mark Heffron on Friday night, he feels that Johnson will go far in the paid ranks. Callum joins John and Joe Murray, Paul and Stephen Smith, Anthony Crolla, Matthew Macklin, Heffron and Gallagher's batch of emerging amateurs in one of Britain's busiest stables.

Callum Johnson makes big career change by joining highly-regarded Gallagher gym

Callum Johnson.A GOLD medal and two professional wins under his belt, Callum Johnson has launched his latest bid to enter British boxing's elite.

The light-heavyweight this week announced he had joined the famed Manchester gym of Joe Gallagher, which boasts some of the most exciting names on the domestic scene.

Simply being connected to a facility which houses European lightweight champion John Murray, Johnson's fellow Frank Warren fighters Paul and Stephen Smith, Anthony Krolla and European middleweight champion Matthew Macklin instantly raises his profile.

Having easily disposed of Northern Irishman Phillip Townley and Scunthorpe's Jody Meikle, Johnson sees 2011 as an opportunity to hone the obvious talents he displayed when claiming the light-heavyweight title at the Delhi Commonwealth Games last year.

And with Gallagher, the Benington boxer can make giant strides by working with a man who has often spoken of his desire to emulate the great Freddie Roach's Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood.

"With Joe, the results speak for themselves," said Johnson, who spent many years at the Lincoln-based Terry Allen Unique ABC.

"I'll be sparring and training with better lads and simply being around the gym with champions will inspire me.

"Just being able to train with those sorts of people is a big deal. I had other options when it came to joining a gym but this one really stood out for me because of its reputation.

"There are areas where of course I can improve, nullifying people who like to hold too much, being a bit smarter in the ring and so on, and I know Joe will really help me out."

Johnson, managed by "Prince" Naseem Hamed, knocked out Townley in his first contest at Glasgow's Braehead Arena last December but could not repeat the feat against Meikle at the same venue earlier this month.

However, he said the Scunthorpe fighter's spoiling tactics put paid to hopes of doubling his KO tally and he recorded a points victory over four rounds.

"He was there just to survive," said Johnson. "Meikle didn't want to fight, he spoiled, held and held, and I had to settle for a points victory.

"I think I was a little bit too anxious in trying to knock him out but it's difficult when your opponent is simply there to hold you. But this year is about getting rounds under my belt and I did that against him.

"I was originally supposed to be fighting on Frank Warren's April card at York Hall but I'm not on that now. They want to hold off for my next date, so it looks like I could be fighting again in May.

"I'm looking to make improvements with every fight I have and now that I'm at Joe Gallagher's gym I can ask him all the time about ways to raise my game."

Johnson will join up with the Gallagher gym at the start of next week
